If you have the luxury of working from home instead of driving to an office each day, you still need your own space. It’s great to work from home but it can also be a big challenge. You’re in your comfort zone and have everything calling your name. The laundry that didn’t get done over the weekend. You notice the layer of dust on the dining room table, and that may prompt you to question what’s for dinner. The list goes on.

It’s important to have your own space when working from home. I don’t recommend using any table that already has a purpose. Such as kitchen and dining room table, or kitchen island for that matter. Those are spaces that have their own use and you’ll have to move everything off to use it. This causes disruption with your work and your environment.

Try to choose an area of your home that has the least amount of traffic. If you don’t have an extra room to dedicate to an office, pick a corner of a quiet room. (Preferably not your bedroom) Place a desk or table there to be your workspace. You have many options today of what you can sit at to work. Choose something uniquely you that brings you joy!

Fold out couches or futons work well depending upon the frequency and length of time people stay.  If you’re one of many who have a guest room that’s rarely used, think about making part of it your office. Many homes today have built-ins. This is a nice, clean look and normally has lots of storage. The only downside is it may be in a high traffic area like the kitchen, hallway, or den area.

smalloffice3When the kids come home from school these areas are the first to be hit. If you have your schedule set to spend time with the kids when they get home this is great! It’s very important to have ‘office hours’ especially at home. Take a lunch break like you would in a regular office, but try and have everything caught up before the family get’s home. I set my office hours and take small breaks throughout the day. This gives me fresh perspective when I go back to the task at hand.

Create a space, make it one you love and call it yours.
